Our Philosophy

PhilosophyOur consistent approach to discipline is based on the teachings of Dr. Haim Ginott. Dr. Ginott first came to public attention in the early 1960s when his book Between Parent and Child remained on the American best-seller list for over sixty weeks. Although Dr. Ginott died in the 1970s, many of his students (notably Adele Faber and Elaine Mazlish) have continued his work.

Values:

  • We value dedication and commitment.
  • We believe that it is the right and responsibility of everyone to ensure a safe community.
  • We value honesty, kindness, inclusiveness and diversity.
  • We model and promote tolerance and mutual respect.
  • We value a consistent and fair approach to discipline based on Dr. Ginott’s teachings, which state the following:
    • never deny a child's feelings, only behaviour is unacceptable.
    • children need the security of limits and structure.
    • dependence breeds hostility. Empower children to do things for themselves.
    • allow children autonomy and choices. Expectations are clearly established and children understand consequences.
  • We value small class sizes, averaging 12 students per teacher.
  • We listen and respond to voices, ideas and feelings of the Kingsley community.
